Private Hofburg tours: your own licensed guide

In short: the private tour puts a licensed guide at your side for two to four hours, with skip-the-line entry to the Sisi Museum and a pace you set yourself. Per person it costs several times what the group tours do, so it needs a reason: a special trip, specific interests, or a family that wants to ask questions without a headset. For most first-timers the flagship group tour covers the same rooms for far less.

What you actually get

The core of every option is the Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments with skip-the-line entry: about 24 rooms, including Franz Joseph’s study and bedroom and Elisabeth’s dressing and exercise room, plus the 300-odd personal Sisi items in the museum. The longer options add the Imperial Treasury and an Old Town walk; the 2.5-hour option comes with hotel pickup. You meet at Schullin “Watches in the Looshaus” on Michaelerplatz 3, and the operator caps groups at 15 per licensed guide — though on a private booking the group is simply your party. One current caveat: the Silver Collection is closed, as it has been since April 2023.

The honest math against the flagship

From €212 per person, against €52 for the flagship group tour — same skip-the-line entry, same rooms. A couple pays €424 where the flagship would cost €104. What the difference buys is control: your questions, your pace, your route on the longer options, and no waiting while 24 other people photograph a desk. David called his guide “one of the best tour guides ever”, and Maria Jose’s guide Maria drew similar marks. The minuses in the reviews are honest ones: João found it “too much information for the short space of time”, and Maillarbaux thought his departure “barely too focused on Sissi but the guide was exceptional”. If you mainly want Sisi context and don’t mind company, the €48–€52 guided group tours are the sensible middle.

Choosing between the 2, 2.5, 3 and 4 hour options

Two hours covers the museum and apartments and suits a tight schedule — that shorter format is where João found the information density heavy, so treat it as the minimum rather than the default. The 2.5-hour version adds hotel pickup, which earns its keep in December weather. Three and four hours are where the private format separates from the group tours, because the Treasury — the crowns — and the Old Town walk come in, and no group product I list combines all of that with one guide. Prices rise with length from the €212 base; check the figure for your date in the widget below, or set it against the door-by-door numbers on my prices page.

What works

  • Skip-the-line Sisi Museum entry with a licensed guide to yourselves
  • Pace, route and questions are yours — no headsets, no herd
  • Longer options fold in the Treasury and an Old Town walk
  • Hotel pickup on the 2.5-hour option

Worth knowing

  • From €212 per person — roughly four times the flagship
  • The museum corridors are the same narrow ones every group walks
  • The Silver Collection is closed until further notice
  • The 2-hour option can feel rushed — one reviewer said exactly that

Insider tip

Book the 3- or 4-hour option if the Treasury is on your list — folding it into the tour beats buying a separate €16 slot and re-orienting yourself at the Schweizerhof entrance afterwards.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private Hofburg tour worth €212?

For two groups, yes: visitors with one shot at Vienna who want everything answered, and families or older travellers who need the pace controlled. For everyone else the €52 flagship does the same rooms well. My ranked verdicts are in which tour is best.

Where does the private tour start?

At Schullin “Watches in the Looshaus”, Michaelerplatz 3, opposite the palace dome. The 2.5-hour option collects you from your hotel instead.

Does it include the Imperial Treasury?

The longer options do; the shorter ones stick to the Sisi Museum and Imperial Apartments. If you skip the Treasury here, the €34 combo covers it self-guided later — see entry tickets.

Can I cancel a private booking?

Yes — free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start, under GetYourGuide’s terms at the time of writing. My full write-up of a private departure is in the private tour review.
